Colette Copeland discusses Rolf Nowotny’s intervention sculpture at the Museo Pietro Canonica a Villa Borghese, Rome, Italy
September 22-October 28, 2018
Matthew 5:24—first go and be reconciled with your brother and then offer your gift.
Danish artist Nowotny created site-specific interventions responding to Pietro Canonica’s historical sculptures. Using materials that contradict traditional formal aesthetics of Roman art, Nowotny’s unlabeled works rupture viewers’ expectations with subversive wit. Juxtaposing the failed domestic with the pristine the intervention collapses the secular and sacred, layering daily pain into the idealized abstraction of Christ. Placed as an offering the gifts function as a warning against hypocrisy examining the gap between the ideal and real.
