Danish artist Nowotny created site-specific interventions responding to Pietro Canonica’s historical sculptures. Using materials that contradict traditional formal aesthetics of Roman art, Nowotny’s unlabeled works rupture viewers’ expectations with subversive wit. Juxtaposing the failed domestic with the pristine the intervention collapses the secular and sacred, layering daily pain into the idealized abstraction of Christ. Placed as an offering the gifts function as a warning against hypocrisy examining the gap between the ideal and real.
