Tumultuous landscapes of political oppression lay in wake, manifested through dream-like cultural iconography from past and present. Pervasively confounding, metaphorical tensions of helping or hurting, making or taking, living or dying, proletariat patriots or debasing authoritarians, all conflated into a series of surreal nightmarish scenes. Nervous anxiety permeates the canvas and engulfs the viewer.
The dysfunctional presence of political order is so palpable it almost shakes the ground beneath your feet. The relevancy of Neo Rauch’s work within the context of our own helter-skelter politics and ensuing cultural disintegration cannot be overstated. How apropos.
