In the style of Ex-Voto and Retablo paintings of Latin America, Tanchak’s intimate installation pays homage to Ukrainian ceramist Oksana Zhnikrup, whose work captured the art world’s attention in 2017 when Jeff Koons purchased the rights and replicated two of Zhnikrup’s figures. Tanchak’s exploration into the feminine form supplants multiple narcissistic assumptions such as the patriarch as savior (and revisionist auteur of art history) and the monumental as iconic (bigger is not always better). Her use of small-scale, non-traditional materials and canvas shapes, as well as the cardboard base as pedestal provides a welcome contrast to the audacious and vapid work frequently found in the art world.
