A curious pairing: disparate media and time period focusing on the body as a vessel to express internal psychological states. An arresting, impressive collection of work, the exhibition fails to delve into the premise of instability of identity developed through an artist’s oeuvre. By displaying the works in separate galleries the viewer is left with superficial connections between subject and composition, reducing questions of how gender influences the shift between body as object and subject rather than engaging complex new insights. The exhibit title rejects the post-death psychoanalytical discourse surrounding the artists’ mental states, instead celebrating their unique expressionist style.
