Ironic or savvy that Banksy’s unauthorized exhibition of 70 original works is on display at a fashion mall, where for $30 one can venture into a darkened storefront, view ornately framed Banksy prints– works originally created for the streets, then exit through the gift shop to buy Banksy paraphernalia? Ironic or savvy that art meant for free public consumption, by an artist who openly criticizes corporate capitalism, falls prey to commodification in the city of spectacle, where anything can be bought for a price? All without the artist’s consent. Genius or Vandal: does the distinction matter, as the same can be said for the organizers.
